STAY FRESH’s 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN: Year Eight, Day Twenty-Eight
Some ghosts haunt houses, this one is haunting the history books!
For Day 28, we’re digging up a little Syracuse history with a woman whose spirit was never one to stay quiet.
We traveled to the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in Fayetteville, NY, where Executive Director Ciarrai Eaton stepped into the role of Matilda’s ghost, wandering the very halls she once called home.
Matilda Joslyn Gage was a pioneering suffragist, writer, philosopher, and fearless advocate for human rights. She fought for women’s political, religious, and intellectual freedom, challenged the separation of church and state, and spoke out against the mistreatment of the Haudenosaunee. She was a force to be reckoned with, yet despite her enormous contributions, much of her legacy was pushed into the shadows of history.
Today, her former home serves as a museum and headquarters of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, keeping her story and spirit very much alive.
With a little help from Ciarrai, we brought Matilda back from the other side for a haunting reminder that some voices are simply too powerful to silence.
Stay Fresh, fiends.
