“Guide my hand, light my path
Show me the way
To reach one day the Baphomet’s throne…”
Baphomet, the satanic black goat or “Goat of Mendes”, is commonly found in Satanic literature and heavy metal imagery. The first known mention of Baphomet dates back to 1098 in a letter from Anselm of Ribemont describing the Siege of Antioch during the First Crusade. Baphomet became a more well-known figure after influential French occultist Éliphas Lévi published his book Dogma et Rituele de la Haute Magie. The Satanic Temple commissioned a statue of Baphomet that was unveiled in 2015 and has been used in protests against the use of “Ten Commandments” monuments in public spaces. While no one in the shop is a member of the Church of Satan, we appreciate the history and the imagery of this goat deity.
